Call It Courage, by Armstrong Sperry is a story about a boy named Mafatu who proves his courage to his village by going out to sea and facing his fear of the water. Mafatu did face his fear of the water but he saw a island from afar and it was completely different from his village so he went towards it. He is injured and hungry, he climbed on top of a plateau and can see the entire island. While he was up he saw smoke in the distance and wonders if he is on the island of “the eaters of men” that his grandfather told him about. Then, Mafatu sees a trail that is made by men, he followed the trail that led to a sacred place.
In Call It Courage Mafatu finds an island different from his, there was trees, peaks, it wasn’t flat land, and it was different from his own village. This scene reminds me of a scene from a book I am reading in a different class, called Kon-Tiki because in both books they go to islands that are different from theirs and they both explored it. For both characters in the book they were struggling to get food and things they needed. They both travel from ships and canoes in the water to get to the land. Lastly, at the end of both stories they both achieve their goal from trying hard and not giving up.

In conclusion, I really liked that part of the book because Mafatu was experiencing something new and I am excited to finish Call It Courage and to see if Mafatu ever goes back home and if his village stops calling him a coward. I also wonder if there is another part to this book.
